Linkage

I’ve spent the last three hours configuring a little plugin that allows me to scatter links amidst my posts. Unfortunately, it has had some adverse effects that I hope to work out soon, primarily dealing with the commenting system. Anyway, I hope you enjoy as much as I plan to!

Home continues to be homey. I was the first kid up today, an impressive feat at 1:15 in the afternoon. It’s interesting observing how my relationship with John has changed since he went to college; we both have a little bit of an outsider perspective on the rest of my family now, and it’s fun being adult enough to compare notes.

At dinner this evening, I have no idea how it came up, but my mom started talking about how she believes people are generally good (not something I necessarily disagree with). She went on to speculate why that is, and boiled her answer down to some “force” greater than individuals. John, my dad and I argued that that might as well mean “god made it so.” I went on to argue two points: first, that I think people might be generally good because they’ve been well socialized; second, that economically, “being good” serves their ends better than the alternative, ie there exist penalties for being bad. John indicated that he didn’t think people were generally good. My dad held his tongue on the general case, but argued that religion has created more bad than good. With this, my mom agreed. It was the most substantive conversation I’ve had with my family in what feels like years. Maybe ever.

After dinner, Katie and I hung out as per usual on our coinciding breaks; we got Starbucks, watched TV, and Wiied until the wee hours.
